Today we visited the Berlin Jewish Museum (http://www.juedisches-museum-berlin.de/site/DE/homepage.php). The structure itself is really neat to look at. It looks kinda like a lighting bolt, with sharp straight edges and vast flat surfaces. After seeing a few museums already, it was nice to see one dedicated to the modern observer or at least ADD friendly. The Berlin Jewish Musuem had moving video clips, audio stations, Ja oder Nein (Yes or No) poll booths for hot topic questions and interesting monuments that do not harp on hardship or suffering too much.
In one part of the musuem, an artist designed an exhibit to be walked on. Within a narrow hall way open several hundred feet above, lay thousands of cast iron metal faces (they looked like reel-to-reel cassettes but with faces carved out). All of the faces look tragic. As you walk on them they clank and echo. It sounds as if they are really crying out.
Following that, Amy and I walked down Karl Marx Allee. It is ironic, because the allee is perhaps the widest street in Berlin. Neat, but nothing fantastic. The Soviet appearence is nearly long gone. From there we hopped on the U Bahn out to the suburbs of East Berlin. Even though it is not glossy or chic out there, it is neat to see the Soviet style apartment buildings...rows of them, complete with straight lines and unmanicured front lawns. It only took us a couple of minutes to get the gist of that. Fortunately, we happened upon an American style mall and found a Reformhaus, a store which specializes in Glutenfree goods. Amy stocked up. She bought chocolate covered rice cakes, panini bread, cereal with dried fruit and box of penne. "I think I am about cry," she said as she gazed in front of the aisle.
Berlin has been good to us. Sure, parts are a little dirty, but the spirit and quality of living are pretty good. We ate at Sophieneck again and sat on the street watching the evening unfold. Tonight we pack our things and get ready for Prague tommorow. Expect a Bohemian post soon.
